“Anything you want to tell me?”

Alex glanced at the clock. Nick would be home soon, and he hadn’t even thought about dinner. He’d just finished working an eight hour shift at Publix, and his muscles ached. A whole eight hours of putting out stock, stretching and carrying, and all he could think about was having a soak in the tub. It would have to wait; right then he needed to throw something together for them to eat.

The last couple of weeks had seen the two men slip into an easy routine. If Alex was home before Nick, he’d prepare the dinner, and vice versa if his shift ended later. Shopping was Alex’s domain, seeing as he worked in a supermarket, although getting home with several shopping bags was something of a challenge, especially as he used Nick’s bike to cycle to and from work. Nick had made the suggestion when Alex had first gotten the job. His bike was sitting idle in the utility room, so it made perfect sense.

Nick hadn’t brought up the subject of Alex leaving, and Alex was in no hurry to do so. He liked their laid-back life. His days were full, even if sometimes the work was monotonous, and the evenings were pleasant. When he wasn’t at work, Alex was in the back yard, digging over the existing flowerbeds and preparing new ones. A couple of visits to Lowe’s had provided them with new plants, not many, but enough to begin changing the look of the yard. Alex loved gardening. He liked that he could see the results of his efforts at the end of a few hours’ labor, and a combination of gardening and work was already doing wonders for his body. His arms had more definition, as did his abs. Who needed a gym membership when they had a garden?

The front door opened. “Hey, I’m home!”

The note of excitement in Nick’s voice made Alex stop in his tracks. He peered around the corner as Nick dropped his bag onto the couch and then grinned when he saw Alex. “You got a minute?”

“Sure.” Alex walked over to the couch. “What’s up?”

Nick’s eyes gleamed. “I have some news you need to hear.” He tugged at his tie and then pulled it off over his head, dropping it onto the couch. “I’ve been thinking about you a lot this past week.”

“Oh?” Nick’s words sent a rush of warmth coursing through Alex. “What did I do?” he joked.

Nick chuckled. “I made a few phone calls today, to the University of Central Florida.”

Alex froze. “Why… what does that have to do with me?” He hadn’t spoken about his college since their last conversation about it a few weeks ago.

Nick smiled. “I spoke to their admissions office. I gave them your situation, how long it had been since you’d studied there, the fact that you didn’t make it through two semesters before you had to leave, the leukemia, the post-induction therapy…”

The skin on the back of Alex’s neck prickled. “So?” His palms were suddenly clammy.
